Julia Fullerton-Batten was born in Bremen in Germany in 1970. She lived in Reading (USA) from 1972 to 1979 and in Frankfurt (Germany) from 1979 to 1986, before leaving for England.

After studying at the Berkshire College of Art & Design she worked as a freelance assistant for five years. She became a professional photographer in 2005 and now lives in London.

" She diverts the equipment and approach of advertising photography ...

She intrigues the viewer with a narrative approach that is lightly sketched in but not developed. The colours are dull and muted except for an occasional splash, and the models have an ambiguous and tense attitude that creates an atmosphere of bizarre alienation, both visual and emotional. Her images combine the technical perfection of advertising photographs, whose seemly immediate significance and evident composition contract with a message that is, to say the least, ambiguous"

Commentary by Alain Sayag, 2007 artistic advisor for the Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie.

Her Teenage Stories Series is a really famous work, although I prefer the In Between Series.
